Batak Culture, Including Dancing

Way back when we gave a workshop on American culture to the Nommensen students. At the end we requested that the students give us a workshop on Indonesian culture. What we got instead was a presentation on Batak culture from our friend, Mr. Hutahyan. At one point there was a need for a dancing demonstration. The students were very hesitant to volunteer. The dancing is quite simple, the only body parts allowed to move are the shoulders, arms, and hands. I believe this form of dancing would even meet the Baptist rules! The hands are first raised together as if in prayer. The dancing is a form of worship.
At one point Mr. Hutahyan stepped up to demonstrate some differences between Batak dancing and that of other cultures.
We love Mr. Hutahyan. He speaks excellent English and studied at the Univ. of Pittsburgh for his doctorate. He has a great sense of humor. His students love him too.
We are all looking forward to a big big dose of AC when we return!
