Earlier this week we wrapped up our fifth workshop "sharing" session with the Sunday School teachers from the HKI Church. Before the session Nancy and Jacob enjoyed some movie viewing with Sun and Eki in our living room. Sun is writing her thesis on American slang and together they watched the Eddie Murphy film "Imagine That" to help Sun pick up some more slang phrases. It is always an adventure to travel anywhere on the road in Siantar. This is a great intersection where the merging traffic from a side road steers into the middle of the road, splitting traffic, before moving all the way over to the left.
The sun has been very bright this week, and there are many Indonesians shading themselves with umbrellas. But almost nobody wears sunglasses.
Every teacher that attended the sessions received a certificate, signed by us, plus the Bishop and Dean Tagor from Nommensen University. Note the lines for our names "Mr. James Jacob Friedrich" and "Ms. Nancy Jacob Friedrich."
After we concluded our last session with the SS teachers, the closing ceremony began. First one of the candidate pastors said some very nice words, expertly translated by Irma.
Then the bishop presented us with an uhlos, a Batak traditional honor. Dean Tagor provides some translation and comments from the side.
He also presented us with many HKI books, including a hymnal.
I believe the Bishop really appreciated the fact that Jacob was playing such a big role in our mission.
It was a very happy occasion for us and the SS teachers. The main pastor of the region is to my right.
As part of the ceremony the pastor candidates led the SS teachers in several songs, including new motions that were much more exciting than we had taught them.
The gang even brought a guitar which added to the festivities.
